Coaching vs. Therapy: What’s the Difference?

There’s a lot of confusion around the difference between coaching and therapy, but the simplest way to understand it comes down to focus and medical necessity.

Therapy is designed to treat diagnosable mental health conditions and is often considered medically necessary care. It may involve diagnosis, insurance (if you choose), and clinical treatment.

Coaching, on the other hand, is goal-oriented, non-clinical support. It’s ideal when you’re navigating life’s challenges, building skills, or working toward personal or professional goals, but don’t need, or don’t want, medical or diagnostic services.

When Coaching May Be the Right Fit

Coaching can be a powerful option if you:

  • Are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, stuck, but still functioning day-to-day

  • Want support without a diagnosis or medical record

  • Value a private, non-judgmental space to think, process, and move forward

  • Have completed therapy and want continued support for growth and accountability

  • Prefer a practical, goal-oriented approach to personal or professional challenges
